Gardens and Stately Homes

Chester and Cheshire is home to several spectacular gardens and magnificent stately homes. Visiting at least one of these during your stay in the region is a must!

Stunning Properties

Some of the properties are National Trust registered. One such example is Dunham Massey Hall, a stunning Georgian house set in 300 acres of grounds which also boasts Britain’s largest winter garden.

Little Moreton Hall and Gardens based near Congleton is another of Cheshire’s National Trust properties. The Hall was built by the Moreton family in fifteenth century and is one of Britain’s largest and most famous timber framed buildings. Also boasting a tranquil orchard and a pretty Knot Garden, Little Moreton Hall is a great location for a family day out.

If you’re looking for a different flavour altogether, why not head to Lyme Park and Gardens near Stockport. Originally built as a Tudor House, Lyme was transformed by the Venetian architect Leoni into an Italianate palace. Its stunning beauty and remote location give you an idea of the grandeur of the place, and once inside relax in the fully-restored library or delve back in time with its historic collection of clocks and ornate woodcarvings.

If you’re heading to the Wirral, then Ness Botanic Gardens is a great destination and is a previous winner of Visit Chester and Cheshire’s Large Attraction of the Year. Overlooking the Dee Estuary, the stunning gardens contain the finest collection of rhododendron and azaleas in the Northwest and one of the best known Heather gardens in Britain.

Norton Priory Museum and Gardens is an award-winning museum and gardens which also has a Georgian Walled Garden, herb garden, fruit garden and vegetable plots. The 38-acre attraction also has fascinating medieval ruins to discover and is based near Runcorn.

Finally, Tatton Park provides a terrific day out for families of all ages. Whether you want to visit The Old Hall, the historic and immaculate Mansion, the award-winning 50 acre gardens or the Home Farm, there is something for everyone at Tatton.
