River Culture

The River Dee runs through the centre of Chester, and offers boating, cruising, alfresco art and riverside cafes and bars.

Every visitor to Chester must visit the River - and what better way to experience it than with a ChesterBoat cruise.

If you're with the family or are looking for some fun the river offers lots of entertainment - hire a pedallo or take a cruise with ChesterBoat past Eaton Hall - home to the Duke of Westminster (one of Britain's richest). During the summer months you'll find many rowers training and racing on the river, and an event not to miss is the raft race - local teams making their own rafts and racing them down the river!

Between the city wall and the river, you will find the Groves. A beautiful riverside promenade with refreshment kiosks, 'The Groves' bar and restaurant serving food and drink with relaxing outdoor seating, and 'The Boat Inn' public house.

Take the opportunity to pick up some individual art work, every Saturday and Sunday (weather permitting), Jill Pears displays her characteristic paintings of Chester buildings, Chester country cottages with character, also land and seascapes.

The 19th century bandstand is used every weekend in the summer providing free entertainment while you watch the world go by. Leading up from The Groves is the beautifully maintained Grosvenor Park, a tranquil green space in the heart of the bustling city.

At night the river remains lively - ChesterBoat offer themed evening cruises including musical entertainment and a BBQ at the riverside Red House public house. The Red House is a stunning building, which has a terraced garden leading down to the River Banks and one wall made entirely from glass. A perfect spot for an afternoon drink or a stylish evening meal.
